Phoenix was born in the wild in the spring of 2014. His pack was removed from the wild in 2015 due to livestock depredation, and Phoenix was transferred to the CWC in 2018 to participate in the breeding program.

Together with his mate, Frida, he raised a healthy litter of 7 pups at the CWC in 2019. In 2020, he fathered a litter of 8 pups and four of those pups were fostered into a wild wolf litter in Arizona at 2 weeks old as part of the cross fostering program. Four pups remain with the pack. Phoenix is a very protective father and never fails to howl at anyone he deems to be a threat.
