Overview
This three-day classroom and hands-on lab experience addresses all aspects of the capture and handling of captive and free-ranging wildlife. The materials and concepts are applicable to a broad array of animal handling situations.
Participants will gain invaluable experience through extensive laboratory work and field practice. Each day includes a hands-on lab, and the entire third day is devoted to working with veterinarians conducting an annual veterinary examination of captive non-tame wolves.
The seminar will also increase the ability of participants to capture escaped animals and to safely contain and potentially evacuate animals in the event of emergencies.

Drugs and drug delivery systems for captive animals
Assessing animal health and anesthetic depth
Individual animal identification systems (ear tagging, tattoos, PIT tags)
Blood and data collection and documentation practices
Legal responsibilities (documentation and storage) associated
with chemical immobilizations
Pen design considerations
Preparing for planned capture and handling event
Handling unplanned disasters and veterinary emergencies
Disaster preparedness and evacuation models.

The Instructor
Dr. Mark Johnson of Global Wildlife Resources, Inc. in Bozeman Montana, has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and Master of Science in Veterinary Science. Dr. Johnson was project veterinarian for the Yellowstone and Idaho gray wolf reintroduction program and veterinarian for Yellowstone National Park. Dr. Johnson provides training, field assistance, and consultation around the world. He is adjunct professor at the University of Montana and was the primary author of the Field Operations Manual for USDA Wildlife Services. Dr. Johnson's dynamic courses are very unique in emphasizing care, honor, and respect for every animal that is handled and for every colleague. His classes combine practical and effective tools & techniques with a heart-felt message that empowers and energizes the course participants. Students and professionals often state that it was the best wildlife handling course they have taken.

Course Logistics
Location: The California Wolf Center is in Julian, about 60 miles east of downtown San Diego. Out of town participants should fly into San Diego's Lindbergh Field. Registrants will receive (mid December) a detailed information package that includes directions to the Center and a list of hotel accommodations. Airport to hotel transportation may be provided.
Date: January 14-16, 2010 (Check in begins at 7:30 am on the first day.) Early registration begins September 1, 2009.
Cost: $525 ($550 after December 25, 2009)
Cancellation Refund Policy: Cancellation on or before December 1, 2009 guarantees an 75% refund. Cancellation on or before December 31, 2009 guarantees a 50% refund. No refunds will be given for cancellations made on or after January 1, 2010.
