Overview
This three-day classroom and hands-on lab experience addresses all aspects of the capture and handling of captive and free-ranging wildlife. The materials and concepts are applicable to a broad array of animal handling situations.
Participants will gain invaluable experience through extensive laboratory work and field practice. Each day includes a hands-on lab, and the entire third day is devoted to working with veterinarians conducting an annual veterinary examination of captive non-tame wolves.
The seminar will also increase the ability of participants to capture escaped animals and to safely contain and potentially evacuate animals in the event of emergencies.

Physical restraint techniques
Drugs and drug delivery systems for captive animals
Assessing animal health and anesthetic depth
Individual animal identification systems (ear tagging, tattoos, PIT tags)
Blood and data collection and documentation practices
Legal responsibilities (documentation and storage) associated
with chemical immobilizations
Pen design considerations
Preparing for planned capture and handling event
Handling unplanned disasters and veterinary emergencies
Disaster preparedness and evacuation models.
Hands-On Lab
- Administering drugs
- Practice drug delivery systems
- Monitoring temperature, pulse, and respiration
- Chemically immobilizing and restraining wolves .
- Handling wolves during annual wolf veterinary check-up of 15 to 18 gray wolves

Global Wildlife Resources, Inc. (GWR) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting wildlife professionals and bringing honor, care, and respect to those animals affected by research and management by:
1) Promoting and improving animal welfare (in a non-prescriptive manner) in programs and activities relating to wildlife research and management.
2) Teaching the highest quality courses in wildlife capture, chemical immobilization and handling.
3) Providing professional preparation and field assistance with wildlife captures, transport, and disease investigations.
The Instructor
Dr. Mark Johnson of Global Wildlife Resources, Inc. in Bozeman Montana , has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and M.Sc. in Veterinary Science. Dr. Johnson was project veterinarian for the Yellowstone and Idaho gray wolf reintroduction program and continues to provide training, consulting, support, and field assistance for gray wolf recovery programs throughout western and mid-western states. Dr. Johnson provides field assistance and instruction across North America and is adjunct professor at the University of Montana and University of Minnesota. Dr. Johnson is the primary author of the Field Operations Manual for USDA Wildlife Services. Course materials developed by Dr. Johnson offer practical field techniques to maximize animal and human safety, reduce scrutiny and liability, and encourage effective, organized, and thorough field operations

Course
Logistics
Location: The California Wolf Center is in Julian, about 60 miles east of downtown San Diego . Out of town participants should fly into San Diego 's Lindbergh Field. Registrants will receive (mid December 2005) a detailed information package that includes directions to the Center and a list of hotel accommodations. Airport to hotel transportation may be provided.
Time: 7:30 am to 5:00 pm Thursday January 25th
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday January 26th and Saturday January 27th
Cost: $450 ($470 after 12/25/2006 ). Includes seminar, materials, certificate, and lunches.
Cancellation Refund Policy: Cancellation on or before: December 1, 2006 (85% Refund); January 10, 2007 (50% Refund); on or after January 11, no refund .
